Pozzolan participates in a cementitious reaction with calcium hydroxide (i.e., lime) and other alkalis. The use of pozzolan with lime in masonry construction dates back to prehistoric antiquity and was highly effective in creating the infrastructure of ancient Rome.
Pozzolans have been shown to mitigate both sulfate and alkali-silica reactions (ASR), which makes it beneficial to use in large concrete projects such as bridges, dams, highways or any project of any size.
While the use of fly ashes has gained acceptance in similar applications, the mineralogical composition of such byproduct materials cannot be as easily controlled as pozzolan. Availability of fly ash in a changing energy marketplace and its reliance on a carbon-intensive process has also become a consideration.
